how many years do i need to take flat foot ballet before going to pointe?
I have done regular ballet for 3 years about 3 years ago and recently started
First of all, it isn't safe to go on pointe before 11 or 12, no matter how long you've danced. If you don't wait until then, your bones haven't changed enough from cartilage to true bone, and you can end up with all sorts of painful foot and ankle problems, even if you're strong enough for pointe work. A good studio/teacher won't allow anyone too young on pointe, no matter how strong or talented.
Once you are old enough, you also need to be strong enough. You need the muscles in the foot and ankle to be strong enough to support the weight of your whole body in an unnatural way. And, speaking from experience, no matter how hard you think it is, it's harder.
More than just foot and ankle strength, though, you need clean enough placement and technique to manage pointe. You have much less margin for error even just standing flat in pointe shoes, because of the narrower sole, to say nothing of how well placed you must be to balance on releve or turn. If you have very strong feet and ankles, but your placement is off, you'll still hit the ground and probably hurt yourself.
It's unlikely three years is enough, unless you started full tilt and have trained your @$$ off and already had a decent body for ballet. But I'd recommend asking your teacher when he/she thinks you'll be ready and what you might do to help prepare yourself above and beyond your normal classes. Make sure when you do this that you don't sound pushy or like you should be on pointe and he/she is wrong to be holding you back. Teachers get that crap from students all the time, so it's important to make it clear you're just asking, not pushing, or you may not get as helpful a response.
And if you have to wait a while to go on pointe, enjoy the little things in that time. Like not waking up to find that your toes have scabbed to your blanket. Or that your socks all have rows of bloodstains and you have tufts of sock fiber dried to your toes.
